American Revolution. Battle of the Chesapeake. Sept. 5, 1781. Also called, Battle of the Virginia Capes. French fleet (left), commanded by Admiral the Comte de Grasse, fires on the British fleet (right) under Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Graves off the mouth of Chesapeake Bay. The French fleet prevented the British from entering Chesapeake Bay to relieve Major General Lord Cornwallis' army at Yorktown, Virginia. The besieged British army surrended on Oct. 19, 1781, effectively ending the military aspect of the American Revolution. Painting by V. Zveg, US Navy, 1962 (painting)
