Franklin Price Knott was one of the first photographers to have color images appear in National Geographic magazine. Logging hundreds of thousands of miles, he had come a long way from his modest beginnings in rural Ohio. Born in 1854, Knott was the 10th son of a father who moved from job to job while his son Franklin won scholarships to Eastern schools and eventually made his way to Europe for further study. In Paris, Knott began a career as a painter of miniature portraits. When then began having eye trouble he took up the new field of color photography. Makeshift darkrooms were erected in the field for developing the plates. The September 1916 issue of National Geographic magazine published pages of Knott autochromes as Scenes of Many Lands, with images made in Africa, Asia, and Europe. ...
