The Queen of Industry, or The New South, by Thomas Nast, 1882. Cover illustration of Harper's Weekly, shows Columbia, a goddess-like personification of the United States, working at a spinning machine. At left above Columbia, a man labeled 'King Cotton' leans against a bale of cotton while stomping on the back of a slave in 1861. In a distant scene, slaves work under the rule of an overseer. At upper right, is a positive image of textile mills spewing smoke, as free African Americans pick cotton
A group of vultures waiting for the storm to 'Blow Over' - -'Let Us Prey.' The political cartoon by Thomas Nast was published in Harper's Magazine, on Sept. 23, 1871. William 'Boss' Tweed and members of his ring, Peter B. Sweeny, Richard B. Connolly, and A. Oakey Hall, weather a violent storm on a ledge amidst the picked-over remains of New York City. But it did not blow over. In Nov. 1873, Tweed received a sentence of twelve years in prison and a $12,750 fine
In 1874, Thomas Nast created this racist caricature of African American politicians emotionally debating in a southern legislature during the Reconstruction Era. Ten years earlier, his depictions of blacks were more empathetic, dignified, and heroic. This may reflect the war weariness and disillusionment cause by 15 years of civil conflict (wood engraving)
