Inspired by iconic photographers such as Robert Frank, Josef Koudelka, and William Klein, he embarked on a trip to New York armed with a Nikon FM camera and a typewriter.
During his time in New York, Derimais enrolled at the International Center of Photography (ICP). He honed his skills in black and white film processing and printing, while immersing himself in the bustling streets of the city. He concluded his American experience with a memorable cross-country journey from New York to Los Angeles on a Greyhound bus.
After completing his military service in 1981, Derimais relocated to London, where he worked briefly as a photographic assistant and continued to refine his street photography. He then returned to Paris in 1983, subsequently embarking on travels to India, Sri Lanka, and various other locations, capturing powerful images of hospital-boats, elephant-keepers, and notable figures such as Salman Rushdie. He lived in Tokyo, London, Nantes, Brussels, Paris (once again), and Beijing before settling in London in 2012.
Throughout his career, Derimais's photographs have graced the pages of esteemed publications like The New York Times, Paris-Match, National Geographic France & Spain, Libération, and many others. In 2019, his black and white street photographs from 1982 were celebrated in a series of booklets published by Café Royal Books.
With a passion for storytelling and an unwavering dedication to his craft, Lionel Derimais continues to capture the essence of life through his lens, leaving a lasting impact on the world of photography.
