James Ensor (1860-1949) was a Belgian painter and printmaker known for his innovative and provocative works. Born in Ostend, Belgium, Ensor studied at the Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts in Brussels before returning to his hometown to establish himself as an artist. He was heavily influenced by the Symbolist movement and the work of artists such as Francisco Goya and Edvard Munch. Ensor's paintings often featured grotesque and macabre imagery, as well as social and political commentary. He was also known for his use of vibrant colors and bold brushstrokes.
