US Civil War. Siege of Charleston, 1863. Three 100-pounder Parrot Rifled cannons at Battery Rosecrans fire at Fort Sumter. After the ironclads shelling proved ineffective, General Quincy Gillmore returned to the heavier land cannons, hoping to blast Sumter into surrender, as he had done to Fort Pulaski on April 10-11, 1862. US Civil War. Siege of Charleston, 1863. 'Marsh Battery' or 'Swamp Angel', was built on 20 foot pilings sunk through the sand, to support a 16,500 pound Parrott gun, that shelled the city of Charleston. Between August 22 and August 23, the Swamp Angel fired on Charleston 36 times. Because it required so much powder to propel projectiles 4.5 miles to the city, the gun burst on the 36th firing.
