Etcher, watercolourist, calligrapher and teacher, Edgar Holloway was born in Mexborough, South Yorkshire in 1914. Leaving grammar school at the age of 13 he studied at evening classes at the school of Art in Doncaster, Yorkshire and through a correspondence course on etching. He earned a living from etchings and portrait commissions, sold through his father's print and framemaking shop. The family moved to London in 1931. By 1941 he came under the influence of Eric Gill and in 1949 settled in Ditchling, Sussex, becoming a member of the Order of the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic.
