Carle Vernet was a French painter and lithographer born in Bordeaux in 1758. He was the son of a painter and engraver, and began his artistic training at a young age. Vernet was known for his depictions of horses and hunting scenes, which were popular subjects in 18th-century France. He also painted portraits and landscapes. Vernet's career took off when he was commissioned to paint a series of hunting scenes for Louis XVI. He went on to become a member of the prestigious Académie des Beaux-Arts and was appointed court painter to Napoleon Bonaparte.
