Ruins of the Banks of Chambersburg, August 1864. The Pennsylvania town was invaded for a third time during the US Civil War, on July 30, 1864, by Gen. John McCauslan 2,800 leading Confederate cavalry. He demanded a ransom of $100,000 in gold for not burning the city. The ransom could not be paid because the town had removed its gold to a safe location. Photo by E. & H.T. Anthony

US Civil War, June 1861. Boston Light Artillery soldiers in camp at Relay House, Maryland, sit at a long table, writing letters. One soldier, in the foreground is sewing. In the background another reads a newspaper against the backdrop of hanging blankets. Photo by E. & H.T. Anthony
The Fairy Wedding Group', Tom Thumb and his bride Lavinia, flanked by Commodore McNutt and Minnie Warren. They were part of P.T. Barnum's Museum and traveling show. The 1863 photo shows the wedding group, but Minnie's dress, veil and hair-do are slightly different than those of another 'wedding scene', suggesting this Carte de Visite was not taken at the wedding, but to sell during the wedding's publicity bubble. Photo by Mathew Brady and E. & H.T. Anthony
