From an early age he wanted to paint but spent most of his life as a commercial artist, working alongside his wife, for forty years, in the same attic studio.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes"> </span>Together they produced the artwork for the advertising departments at Kendal Milne in Manchester, Hendersons of Liverpool, Jenners of Edinburgh and C&A in London. </font></span></p>

Walter's increasingly naïve pastoral scenes with trademark 'humpy' hills, owe much to his son-in-law, George Frederick's influence, as well as Samuel Palmer and Thomas Bewick. He rejoiced in the versatility of acrylics, enjoying the freedom to paint.</font></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0cm 0cm 0pt"><span lang="EN-GB"><font face="Times New Roman" size="3">Joseph Arnold the card manufacturers took up with Walter and his wife, reproducing many of their paintings on cards. Living in rural Oxfordshire in his latter years he enjoyed numerous commissions - horses and riders, houses and dogs and his work is held in many private collections around the world. </font></span></p>
