Born in Jersey to an artistic family originally from Cheshire, Butterworth began to draw horses at the age of four. She was educated at Jersey College for Girls and on leaving school worked in stables as a groom. She moved to Devon where she worked in hunt stables and hunted with the Silverton and East Devon Foxhounds.<br> <br> Her portraits of horses and dogs and hunting and racing scenes soon found a market with Christmas card firms. In 1951 Fores Gallery began to exhibit her work, and in 1955 some of her work was published in limited editions under the pseudonym ‘Vixen’.
