Ten women teachers of freedmen in front of Mission House, Beaufort, SC, in 1862. They were sent by the American Missionary Association of New York in response to Gen. Thomas W. Sherman's General Order No. 9, requesting teachers for the ex-slaves. Two African American boys stand at left, hiding their faces with caps. Mission House, was previously known as 'The Anchorage,' or 'Elliot House,' at 1103 Bay Street. During the Civil War occupation, it was also used a Union Army hospital. Photo by Sam Cooley
African American children and adults at the Freedmen's school on Edisto Island, SC, 1862-65. In the center in the doorway stand several Caucasian men and women, who likely are the school's teachers. During the American Civil war, the Union Army occupied much of coastal South Carolina from 1862-65. The Federal government supported Abolitionist officers and volunteer civilians efforts assisting the ex-slaves' transition to self-sufficient citizenship. Photo by Sam Cooley
US Civil War. Siege of Charleston, 1863. Union Battery Chatfield on Morris Island has a Parrot gun aimed at Fort Sumter. The soldiers' clean uniforms indicates this is a set up shot, not taken during a battle. Photo by Sam Cooley, 1863-64.

Myrtle Bush Plantation, Beaufort, S.C. in 1862, after the Union Army occupied the coastal South Carolina in 1862. African Americans look out from the second story windows, children sit on the front steps, near African American men. The plantation house was probably abandoned by its Confederate owners when the Union Army occupied the Sea Islands in Nov. 1861. Civil War photo by Sam Cooley
