(1857-1947)<br />Forbes is regarded as the founding father of the Newlyn School. His paintings of Cornish fishing life convey the different aspects of the local industry: the toil, the equilibrium which derives from long-established ways of life and the extreme beauty of this environment.<br /><br />Forbes studied at the Lambeth School of Art (1874-76) and at the Royal Academy Schools (1876-78) but it was during a two-year period in Paris that he discovered the rustic realism of Jean Francois Millet and Jules Bastien-Lepage.<br /><br />Forbes’ most famous paintings are resonant with the sights (1857-1947)<br />Forbes is regarded as the founding father of the Newlyn School. His skill with the human figure is undoubted: portraits such as those of his mother or the anonymous sage in At the Quayside, portray figures which seem hewn out of the paint – physical presences looming out of the canvas. Stanhope Forbes’ paintings draw the viewer into their midst. Even his more gruelling images possess a charm which is due to their serenity rather than excessive sentiment.<br /> ...
