Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Hoyes’ professional artist career began at the early age of nine when he sold wood-carvings and watercolours to foreign tourists. At 15, he moved to New York to continue his artistic endeavors, apprenticing as a painter and sculptor. He studied at Vermont Academy under a scholarship and graduated with a BA Fine Arts degree at the College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland, California.
