Emil Nolde was a German-Danish painter and printmaker born in 1867. He studied at the School of Applied Arts in Karlsruhe and later at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Nolde was a member of the Die Brücke group, which was a German expressionist movement. He was known for his use of bold colors and his expressionistic style. Nolde's work often depicted landscapes, flowers, and religious themes. He was also interested in the cultures of non-European countries, which influenced his work.
