Kurt Schwitters was a German artist born in Hanover in 1887. He is best known for his contributions to the Dada movement, which emerged in the early 20th century as a response to the horrors of World War I. Schwitters was a prolific artist who worked in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, collage, and poetry. He is perhaps best known for his collages, which he called "Merz" after a fragment of the word "Kommerz" that he found in a newspaper. Schwitters was also a pioneer of sound poetry, which he called "Ursonate."
