Hilary Simon is a silk painter internationally recognised for her expertise in the medium. Originally trained as a theatre and costume designer, she travelled to Java to study traditional batik with a master batik artist before discovering the French technique of painting on silk using a gutta resist. These formative experiences laid the foundation for a career spanning decades, during which she has helped establish silk painting as a respected contemporary art form. Her work has been extensively published and is held in private collections worldwide.

She leads specialist art and textile tours to Mexico and Peru, sharing her knowledge of indigenous craftsmanship, natural dyes and cultural heritage.
She is a respected curator and educator, and has curated two major textile exhibitions at the Fashion and Textile Museum in London. She regularly teaches silk painting workshops for museums, galleries and arts organisations, including the Fashion and Textile Museum, West Dean College, and Tate Modern.
