Alfred Stieglitz was an American photographer and art promoter born in Hoboken, New Jersey in 1864. He is considered one of the most influential photographers of the 20th century. Stieglitz studied engineering in Germany before returning to the United States to pursue photography. He founded the Photo-Secession group in 1902, which aimed to promote photography as a fine art. Stieglitz also published the influential photography magazine Camera Work from 1903 to 1917. He was a pioneer of modernist photography and his work often focused on the urban landscape and the human form.
