George Frederic Watts was a prominent English painter and sculptor born in London in 1817. He was a self-taught artist who began his career as a portrait painter, but later turned to allegorical and symbolic subjects. Watts was known for his grandiose and dramatic style, often depicting mythological and biblical scenes with a sense of mysticism and spirituality. Throughout his career, Watts was a prolific artist, producing over 500 paintings and sculptures. He was also a social activist and philanthropist, using his art to raise awareness of social issues such as poverty and inequality.
