White’s work engages deeply with the role of dissent in the contemporary world, interrogating themes such as human rights, postcolonialism, and the dynamics of power. His commitment to abstraction is rooted in a belief in art’s potential as a moral and political force—a tradition that echoes the values of early Abstract Expressionists.
Over the past two decades, his work has been exhibited widely across Europe, Asia, and Australia. He has participated in international residencies at institutions including the American Academy in Rome, the Leipzig International Art Programme, and the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Latvia. His work is held in public collections such as the Rothko Centre, the Tweed Regional Gallery, and SECCA in Australia.
White has been recognised with numerous awards, including the Marten Bequest Travelling Scholarship, the Creative Arts Fellowship at the National Library of Australia, and repeated shortlistings for major prizes such as the Glover and Paddington Art Prizes. His exhibitions often explore the tension between aesthetics and activism, with recent projects such as Manifestation and After Eureka examining civil disobedience and sovereign power through a contemporary lens.
Through a visually arresting and conceptually rigorous practice, Anthony White continues to question dominant narratives and advocate for new ways of seeing and understanding our world. ...
