Romare Howard Bearden was an African American artist born in Charlotte, North Carolina in 1911. He grew up in Harlem, New York and attended New York University, where he studied art and education. Bearden's work was heavily influenced by his experiences growing up in Harlem and his interest in African American culture and history. He was a prominent figure in the Harlem Renaissance, a cultural movement that celebrated African American art, literature, and music in the 1920s and 30s.
