Influenced by his father who was a film projectionist and amateur photographer in Amsterdam, Peter Edens was gifted his first camera at the age of twelve and inherited his father’s 8mm movie camera two years later.

When his father gave him his 35mm photo camera two years later, Peter started taking photography more seriously. After spending family holidays in the south of France throughout his youth, Peter worked on different local photo assignments before starting to travel in the mid 1970s.
Peter embraces an “unplugged” approach to photography, capturing authentic and spontaneous moments without staging or manipulation. He believes that true, meaningful images emerge through deep immersion in the culture and daily life of his subjects. By spending extended periods on location, he builds connections that allow for a more profound and honest visual narrative.
Peter's work is characterised by his ability to blend into different environments, facilitated by his fluency in multiple languages and his adaptive, intuitive presence. His photographs are taken in the moment—without interference—offering a raw and direct representation of reality. He contrasts his approach with staged or orchestrated imagery, striving instead for a natural, unscripted aesthetic.
Throughout his career, Peter has observed shifts in attitudes toward photography, with the rise of social media altering public perception and behavior. However, he continues to seek places where spontaneity thrives, embracing each journey—whether near or far—as an opportunity to discover and document life in its truest form.
Peter Edens lives in Burgundy, France, and his last exhibitions were in Sète 2019 and at the Arles photography festival in 2020. ...
