André Masson was a French painter, sculptor, and printmaker born on January 4, 1896, in Balagny-sur-Thérain, France. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was influenced by the Surrealist movement. Masson's early works were influenced by Cubism, but he later developed a more organic style, incorporating biomorphic forms and automatic drawing techniques. He was also interested in the subconscious and the dream world, which he explored in his art. During World War II, Masson fled to the United States, where he continued to work and exhibit.
