MAKING CLOTHES FOR THE BOYS IN THE ARMY, by Adalbert John Volck, American etching, 1861-63. Confederate women revived the craft of spinning and weaving cotton to replace blockaded fabric trade with the northern states and Europe. Spinning wheels and looms were retrieved from storage and worked by women and slaves throughout the south during the US Civil War (etching)
