Helen Frankenthaler was an American abstract expressionist painter born in New York City in 1928. She studied at Bennington College in Vermont, where she was introduced to the work of Jackson Pollock and other abstract expressionists. Frankenthaler's signature style involved pouring thinned paint onto unprimed canvas, allowing the colors to soak in and create a sense of depth and luminosity. Her work was influential in the development of color field painting, a style that emphasized large areas of color and simplified forms.
