Gilbert Spencer was a painter, especially of landscapes, draughtsman, teacher and writer. He was born at Cookham, Berkshire, and studied at the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, and woodcarving at the Royal College of Art. He also studied at the Slade School of Fine Art with a break for military service.<br />

Spencer had his first one man show at the Goupil Gallery in 1923 and also exhibited at the RA, the Leicester Galleries, RSA, and Redfern Gallery. Although he produced notable wall paintings for Holywell Manor, Oxford (1934-36), Spencer made his name as a l (1892-1979)<br />

At various times he taught at the Royal College of Art, Glasgow School of Art and Camberwell, serving meanwhile as an official war artist (1940-43). A retrospective exhibition was held at Reading in 1964. The Tate Gallery and many other public collections hold his work, sometimes just signed G.S.<br />
