Grant Wood was an American painter born in Anamosa, Iowa in 1891. He is best known for his regionalist style, which depicted rural life in the Midwest. Wood studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and later in Europe, where he was influenced by the works of the Old Masters. He returned to the United States in 1926 and settled in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, where he taught at the local art school. Wood's most famous painting is "American Gothic," which depicts a stern-looking farmer and his daughter standing in front of their farmhouse.
