Senator Henry Clay in 1843 portrait by Theodore Sidney Moise. In 1844 he was the leader of the Whig Party and its Presidential nominee against the Democrat, James Knox Polk. While this was Clay's strongest run for the presidency, Polk won the election, taking 49.5% of the popular vote and 170 of the 275 electoral votes. Clay returned to his career as an attorney in Lexington, Kentucky (oil on canvas)
