British 1840s depiction the 'Progress of Cotton', by Richard Barfoot, 6 of 12. Spinning machines are attended by two women and a man as they create spun thread from cotton roving. A small girl works within the frame of the machine. The multi-spindle spinning frame, was one of the key developments in the industrialization of weaving. The technique was invented in 1764 by James Hargreaves, in Lancashire in England (lithograph)
British 1840s depiction the 'Progress of Cotton', by Richard Barfoot, 5 of 12. After the cotton is carded, it is processed in the Bobbin and Drawing-Frames. At far left, long rolls of carded cotton are drawn between sets of metal rollers, then drawn together, and loaded into the tall metal can. The Bobbin-Frame, (third machine from left) receives the Cotton in the metal can after drawing; here it passes between rollers similar to the first set in the Drawing-Frame, as set of Spindles, twists the Cotton, turning it into a soft string, which wraps around large Bobbins about nine inches long. The Jack-Frame, (second from left) in the picture, then carries on the process by working the slightly twisted string finer and tighter, and running it on Bobbins of smaller size (lithograph)

British 1840s depiction the 'Progress of Cotton', by Richard Barfoot, 9 of 12. Reeding or drawing in. Women pull the spun thread wrapped on a 'Beam of Warp Yarn' through the vertical spaces in the 'Reed'. The reed is part of a weaving loom, and resembles a comb, and separates and spaces the warp threads, which guide the shuttle's motion across the loom. It also pushes the weft threads into place (lithograph)

Before bleaching, the cotton fabric is passed over a red-hot Iron Plate, which burns off the ends of the fibers or nap, making the surface even for Printing. It goes through other processes, before it is put into a stone cistern filled with chloride of lime and water, which is called 'Bleaching Liquor'. More processes follow, before it is dried in a hot stove (lithograph)
